Plot Twists, Where Everything Changes
An interview with novelist Scott Spencer on Fresh Air
Most of the time I have a short attention span for the radio when I’m driving, but this NPR interview gripped me for a full 15 minutes, some of which were spent sitting in the grocery store parking lot because I had a hard time pulling myself away! I’m not familiar with Scott Spencer’s work at all, but the more I listened the more curious I became and the more my respect for this man grew. In the interview he discusses his novel Man in the Woods, whose plot revolves around an accidental but grave act of violence, committed by the main character. This violent act causes the death of a man and drastically changes the course of the main character’s life in a single instant. These kinds of stories intrigue me, and it seems they intrigue Spencer too, though he has obviously had much more experience working through them in his writing, talking about them in radio interviews, and confronting them in real life through his experience teaching in a high security prison! Anyway, I don’t want to go on too much for fear of giving away the entire interview. If you have a spare half hour it is well worth a listen and definitely well worth the contemplation of human nature it will provoke!
